  1.  Combine with Alpha-Lipoic Acid for the best results.
I've been taking 1500mg of Acetyl L-Carnitine a day for over a year. Recently I noticed research that indicated that combining it with alpha lipoic acid made it more effective in studies with rats and people. This combination is marketed as a pill called Juvenon, but it's cheaper to take a 500mg Acetyl L-Carnitine capsule and a 250mg alpha lipoic acid capsule. This company has done a considerable amount of research. I take the Acetyl L-Carnitine because I believe it helps me to metabolize fat at a higher rate while exercising. I like to go on long bicycle rides. I ride at a speed that burns approximately 800 calories an hour. In endurance sports one is burning a combination of fats and carbohydrates. If you are metabolizing fat more efficiently, it may help to preserve your stored carbohydrates. Once your stored carbohyrdrates are deplteted you get what is called the bonk. You are burning mostly just fat and protein. These fuels can only be metabolized at a very low rate compared to carbohydrates. This means that you can only turn the pedals at a rate that is burning possibly 200 - 300 calories an hour. Once you reach the bonk, you must stop and eat some easilly digested carbohydrates; even then it takes around half an hour before you start feeling better. When I am taking the Acetyl L-Carnitine I feel that my energy level at the end of the ride is better. I seem to be able to eat less during the ride without reaching the bonk. The results are subtle, but I feel that they are more than just a placebo effect for me. After reading the research on aging rats I started giving my blind 14 year old weiner dog the combo of ALC and alpha lipoic acid also. It appears that his cataracts have begun to dissapate a little and he seems to be a little more energetic. My understanding is that when you are young you have plenty of carnitine in your muscles, but as you get older you are more likely to have a deficiency. It seems to help my performance, I am 43. My wife claims that I fart more when I'm taking it; she says that the dog does also.
